2007 - 2008 Board of Directors

Michael Shapiro has a multi-generational relationship to Akiba-Schechter. He and his wife, Amy Kenter, have two children, both Akiba graduates. Michael himself attended Akiba from 1st through 8th grades in South Shore, graduating in 1969. His mother taught Kindergarten for some of the 1960’s and his father served on the Board. His father was a member of the committee on the merger of Akiba with Solomon Schechter of Hyde Park in 1972. Michael’s sister, Susan, also graduated from Akiba.

Michael is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and the Director of the Vitreoretinal fellowship at the University of Illinois. While he performs all types of retinal surgery, his area of note is pediatric retinal surgery. He was the first person to use laser treatment for Retinopathy of Prematurity in Chicago.

Michael has served Akiba in many ways. He is a past President of the Board and a co-chair of the Capital Campaign.
